Reading’s location at the meeting point of the Thames and Kennet rivers due west of London, has made it a popular and accessible town for 1,400 years. With some of the best transport links in the country, the borough of Reading now stretches to accommodate nearly 150,000 people and today is an important commercial hub with a small, but growing student population.
Renowned as one of the UK’s top ten retail destinations, Reading offers much more than just shopping. From the ruins of a medieval monastery to state-of-the-art business parks, Reading continues to acknowledge its ancient heritage while embracing the change necessary to compete in 21st century commerce.
Within the Reading borough itself, public transport is mainly served by road; with taxi services and a local bus network which covers both the main urban area and the surrounding towns. More recently Reading has experimented with a bicycle sharing system which is set to expand to include 1,000 bicycles available at 150 docking stations across the town.
Reading’s relatively small student population gathers in areas to the east of central Reading such as Woodley or lower rent areas including Northcourt, Earley and Whitely.
