Scotland’s second biggest city is also the country’s capital and the seat of the Scottish parliament. Edinburgh has a thriving economy which revolves around banking, financial services, education and tourism. Aside from the thousands of listed buildings that have made Edinburgh a UNESCO World Heritage site, people from the four corners of the globe also visit Edinburgh for its culture. It’s this combination that resulted in Edinburgh being voted ‘the UK’s most desirable city’ in a 2009 YouGov poll.
Edinburgh is well served by road and rail links to the rest of Scotland and England, while transportation within this relatively small city is primarily provided via multiple bus services which cover the city centre and all adjacent suburbs. The construction of a tram service started in 2008, but after a series of delays and cost increases, it won’t be fully operational until 2014.
